The worst blizzard in 70 years delivered high
winds, record low temperatures, and heavy snow to most of the U.S.
and Canada east of the Rocky Mountains, causing 142 deaths.
Race riots occurred in Chicago, Cleveland, and
Atlanta.
Nearly 400,000 U.S. troops were in Southeast Asia
by year end.
Miniskirts were a fashion rage, with hemlines as
much as seven inches above the knee.
Half of the 11 million televisions sold in 1966
were color sets.
Betty Friedan founded The National Organization
of Women.
The first rare and endangered species list
appeared.
Texas Instruments introduced its first hand-held
calculator.
Use of LSD and other hallucinogens increased
considerably.
“Psychedelic” came into popular use.
Newly introduced products and inventions included
hand-held calculators, Mastercard and BankAmericard credit cards,
and Pampers disposable diapers.
3,637 U.S. soft drink bottling plants were in
operation.
The “Hires to you!” slogan was updated with the lettering style and colors from the new logo.

The crown cap
produced for the newly named “Diet Hires Root Beer” also displayed the
new logo.

A late year promotion offered the choice of four
different wristwatches to customers who mailed in $5.95 and 12 Hires
crown cap cork liners per watch.
The offer expired December 31, 1966.

The Barker Company manufactured this metal thermometer for Hires in 1966. This version displays a temperature range of -70° to +110° Fahrenheit. Barker produced an updated version in 1970 displaying a range of -80° to +120° Fahrenheit.
